Humerus Fracture - Developing a concept and restoration. „Woman with Purse" by Duane Hanson
The „Humerus Fracture" of the sculpture „Woman with Purse" (1974) by Duane Hanson, from the collection of the Museum Ludwig in Köln had lost an arm and therefore needed to be restored. A restoration concept for the sculpture made from unsaturated polyester (UP) was developed. In line with restoration procedure the previously detached arm was re-attached with a form fitting bond to the body of the sculpture. The band itself was established by calculating the anticipated force imposed on the joint, selecting the adhesive based on tensile strength and installing a „Sheet Anchor". In practice, due to the rigidityofthe sculpture's material, a camp/ex rig was developed to hold the damaged piece in exactly the right place prior to fixing.
