SamenvattingQuantitative data on demography are vital building blocks for understanding cultural and landscape changes. This contribution highlights the making and testing of evidence-based population estimates based on archaeological data in the Roman and early-medieval Netherlands. The reconstructed demographic trends were validated by means of comparison, using multi-proxy data and evaluating data reliability. Results show a substantial late and post-Roman population decline. Regional differences however, were substantial as well. As this diversity may be crucial to explain manifestations of regional cultural differences during the late-/post-Roman period, demographic reconstructions require a multi-scale approach.
