Samenvatting
In the context of the Cologne research project on the Painting Techniques of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, the question of picture composition and underdrawing was accorded particular attention. The birth of an Impressionist picture had rarely been made the explicit object of study, presumably due to the much-quoted myth of spontaneity and rapid execution on the part of the Impressionists, which did not lead to expectations of any precise planning of a picture, let alone an underdrawing. The results of the investigations in Cologne came as a surprise, therefore, as they revealed a multitude of sketch-like underdrawings of various extent. Claude Monet, Gustave Caillebotte, Berthe Morisot, Alfred Sisley, Auguste Renoir--none of these artists seems to have dispensed with underdrawings entirely. The discovery of drawn preliminary sketches was made possible not only with infrared techniques, but with other aids as well. Given these conditions, it was possible to ascertain and analyze various kinds of underdrawing, sometimes also as the result of transfer processes, in the paintings of Henri Edmond Cross, Hippolyte Petitjean, Théo van Rysselberghe, and Vincent van Gogh.
