SamenvattingThe new Netherlands’ Archives Act paves the way for more sustainable preventive conservation practice in Dutch archives. Instead of the regular 18 ± 2 °C and 50 ± 5% RH requirement for storage rooms, proposals have been made for a wider bandwidth and seasonal fluctuations. Simulations show that by allowing more freedom in
terms of temperature and humidity requirements, 80%–85% of energy can be saved in existing storage rooms. Entirely passive storage rooms might even be developed. Moreover, it encourages conservators to rethink and become more aware of their actions and collections’ needs in terms of collection lifetime versus energy demand. Instead of a tick box list, actual knowledge is expected that needs to be incorporated into planning and
reporting to show that the indoor climate complies with the Archives Act. Guidance is given in the
form of protocols, which give enough support but also make room for sustainable solutions and new
developments
