The aim of this investigation was to find answers to a number of questions put forward by the conservators during the
examination and treatment of the paintings. Although pigments and media used were not systematically identified so as to determine van Gogh's palette during his Arles period, the present results give an impression of the materials involved.
The scientific investigation concentrated on two sorts of problems:
1. the first had to do with the method the conservators had chosen for the surface cleaning of the paintings. For this method, developed by R. Wolbers, the identification of the layers to be removed is of great importance as the solvent mixtures are chosen in consequence.
2. The second sort of problem came from the fact that a number of - mostly organic - pigments had obviously changed in colour. As a result of this the paintings do appear in somewhat more subdued colours than when they were painted.
The question usually was: what pigment was used, did the colour change and what was that colour before it changed?
The general approach to this investigation was that each problem was thoroughly discussed with the conservators. Type,
size and place of samples were chosen together with the conservator and in accordance with the issue.
When this - e. g. due to lack of time - was not possible, problems in finding the correct interpretation of the
analytical results were now and then observed. All samples were first by all investigators examined jointly
under a stereomicroscope. In each case the question or questions related to that sample was discussed again. As
everyone represented one analytical special by (microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, chromatography) together it was
decided how to use each sample, which analytical techniques to apply and in which combinations so as to be able to give
an answer to all questions brought forward.
