SamenvattingMuseums of modern and contemporary art often lack the necessary information on materials and techniques used by artists. Information of this kind is crucial to the conservation of modern and contemporary art. This conclusion of the symposium Modern Art: Who Cares (1997) has prompted the Netherlands Institute for Cultural Heritage to start the research project 'Artist's interviews'. The project aims to offer conservator/restorers and curators a method for conducting artist's interviews in such a way that they yield the information required for the conservation of contemporary art works. Interdisciplinary collaboration between conservator/restorers and curators is a major precondition of the project. The point of departure is to collect information on materials and methods used, their meaning to the artist, and his or her attitude towards ageing and conservation or restoration. The assumption is that once an artist's oeuvre can be únderstood' in this way, questions surrounding conservation can be answered-now and in the future.
