SamenvattingKnitted polyamide, a form of material commercially known as Nylon, was originally designed for high-strength applications (Budinski, 2010). However, it is now often used in art installations in which it is prone to chemical (De Groot, 2013) and mechanical damage. There is little information on how to deal with such damage in works of art. An investigation of the mechanical damage of two such artworks by Ernesto Neto and Madeleine Berkhemer was therefore conducted to provide more insight into possible conservation treatments. The investigation involved mapping the construction and damage for Celula Nave by Neto, materials identification and mechanical testing of unaged
and aged materials. The mapping showed that damage occurred in areas of high stress concentration, either due to the installation process and residual stresses in the construction, or due to visitors. The aging of the materials does not appear to contribute significantly to the sensitivity of the materials for mechanical damage. The results of mechanical testing and artificial aging in this study showed that conservation treatments could make it possible to display the work again. Nonetheless, some of the fabrics in the work will need to be replaced.
