SamenvattingThis paper reflects on the history and development of AFR in the Netherlands with the question: ‘How has the AFR
profession developed since the 1990s in the Netherlands and which new techniques can be identified?’. Using a case study, this paper aims to start a discussion on the topic of the 21st-century techniques and skills required to develop AFR, which have advanced considerably since the 1990s in terms of digitalisation of tools and a higher quality of documentation equipment, analytical techniques such as SEM-EDX and more health and safety awareness. However, analytical methods should be supported with knowledge of traditional craftsmanship and art technological source research to fully understand and recognise the historic finishings during AFR. Future developments in the Netherlands are a continuation of recent advancements such as the international name change from architectural paint research to architectural finishes research, which begs for more implementation and stimulation of research into binding media and varnish layers, and finishes other than paint in Dutch interiors. Collaboration is also necessary, mainly with heritage scientists, for interpretation of the scientific results, and with software programmers to design 2D and 3D modelling software to develop AFR in the future.
