SamenvattingThis chapter examines how emerging digital technologies intersect with traditional craftsmanship in the conservation and restoration of major European monuments. Through a comparative analysis of three case studies—the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, the Dom Tower in Utrecht, and the Grote Kerk in Breda—it explores how advanced methods such as 3D scanning, laser mapping, and Computer Numerical Control (CNC) milling reshape practices of stonemasonry and sculpture. Drawing on project documentation, expert interviews, and field observations, the study interrogates how automation and digital fabrication influence notions of authenticity, material integrity, and the transmission of tacit knowledge in heritage conservation. The comparison reveals divergent restoration philosophies: Notre Dame prioritizes efficiency and precision through digital replication; the Dom Tower balances mechanical assistance with artisanal handcraft; and the Grote Kerk integrates both by designing digital workflows that preserve manual finishing and creative intervention. By situating these practices within longer historical debates between Viollet-le-Duc’s idealized reconstruction and Ruskin’s material authenticity, the chapter highlights the enduring tension between technological innovation and human expertise. It argues for hybrid conservation models in which digital tools support rather than replace craftsmanship, ensuring that restoration remains both materially sustainable and culturally meaningful. Ultimately, it calls for educational and ethical frameworks that preserve the intangible heritage of artisanal knowledge alongside the tangible heritage of monuments themselves.
