SamenvattingMuseum Beelden aan Zee received a generous gift of 21 plaster sculptures plus one bronze
made by Hans (or Jean) Arp from the Arp e.V. foundation. Museum Beelden aan Zee would like
to understand the risk profile of the plaster sculptures in the exhibition gallery and in the
storage room. The museum would like to know which cost effective measures can be
implemented to optimize preservation in storage and exhibition.
During a visit of the museum a visual evaluation of the preservation quality of the building,
exhibition space and storage rooms was made. Relative humidity and temperature data,
collected in the Grote Zaal between Augustus 2023 and September 2024 were made available
for analysis. From the relative humidity and temperature profiles it can be readily seen that
both fluctuate. Daily fluctuations for relative humidity are approximately 10% and weekly
fluctuations are approximately 15%, within the range of 40% to 70%. The indoor absolute
humidity closely follows the outdoor climate indicating an effective exchange of out- and indoor
air.
X-ray photos of three statues show different types of constructions with varying susceptibilities
for mechanical damage and / or corrosion of iron parts in the plaster. The presence of insects
also indicated that the building is open to the outside. Droppings from the unidentified insects
increase the risk of soiling of the plaster surface. Comparison of photos of a corrosion spot on
Owl taken in 2006 and 2024 indicate that the risk of corrosion is small.
It is recommended to develop and discuss more risk scenario sentences to complete the risk
assessment so that cost effective measures can be identified to reduce the risks to the
collection. For the storage spaces it is recommended to close the gap between ceiling and wall
in the large storage room and to reduce the air flow from the gipsotheek into and out of the
small storage room. Climate monitoring is advised in the storage spaces.
